Non-Routine Maintenance
Project | Target Completion Date | Labor Needed | Parts Needed | Notes | Cost Estimate |
Replace Europe Tower | Undetermined | Three ground, two professional climbers, crane operator | Various, see list in project document | See project document | ~18,000 |
Rebuild SA tribander | Prior to Europe tower replacement | One climber, one ground | Parts on hand obtained by N7IR | Take down antenna, clean and re-seal traps, replace any questionable parts | Parts on hand; only cost will be travel subsidies for people |
Replace WARC rotor | March 2018 | One climber, one ground helpful | New custom made backer plate which should be at Signal Point, made by W0CG in 2016; specialized stainless rotor bolts and flat washers should also be on hand | Grinder will be used to remove old rotor with fused bolts, replace rotor, send old one to CATS for rebuild; wiring will have to be spliced by hand on tower due to non-standard connector | Rebuild rotor ~$300 including shipping |
Inspect black rope on both elements of US/JA 80 meter wire beam and replace or reposition if needed |
March 2018 Completed 23 February 2018 |
One climber, one ground | None | Rope may be weakening at the pulleys; if needed, cut off some rope and attach elements to fresh ends | 0 |
Tune US/JA 80 meter beam per K6AM procedure |
Fall 2018 Completed 27 Feb 2018 |
One climber, one ground | Signal strength meter for far field | Requires lowering down one element at a time, tuning, and then restoring elements to normal position | 0 |
Install new driven element spacer on Ridge tribander | Late 2018 | One strong climber, three ground | New Bencher spacer | Spacer on east elements has broken and fallen off; reinstall with UV protection tape | ~ 150 |
Install Pacific tribander on new Europe tower so it truly points west | Concurrent with Europe tower replacement | Two climbers, two ground | Additional N8LGP side mount cradle with offset bracket; needs to be designed and fabricated | Contact N8LGP and also study available known designs; get the boom off the tower leg | ~ 400 |
Retune Europe 3 element 80 wire beam | 2019 ? | One climber, two ground | None | Collapse two elements at a time, attach MFJ to feedpoint, tune front 20 KHz below and back 30 KHz above; model this first | 0 |
Replace missing reflector element tip on Europe yard 20 | Concurrent with Europe tower replacement | One ground | Element tip is in shack in front of kitchen backsplash | Install new element clamp if needed | 0 |
Inspect and repair as necessary 40 yagi | Concurrent with Europe tower replacement | Two ground | Kit of parts yet to be determined | We will only have a short time, a couple hours, to re-hab this beam where needed. This will be planned in a separate document. | ~ 450 |
Retune 6 meter yagi DE to 50.100 | March 2018 | Two climbers | MFJ | This can be done without taking the antenna down | 0 |
Prototype a US ocean vertical for 80 | 2019 ? | Three ground | Fabricated vertical, base, and all support parts; ~500 ft coax | Research K2KW material on optimum spacing from salt water, then design a temp vertical to be placed by the water about 300 feet from station; install it temporarily and then do on-air comparisons | ~ 500 |
Investigate purchase of land on Ridge | 2018 ? | Attorney | None | Engage a Curacao attorney to determine with the Kedaster office the present owneship of that land and the possibility of buying a section; research right-of-way laws on the feedline route. | ~ 1500 legal fees |
Add two feet vertically of concrete to base of WARC tower | 2019 ? | Two ground | Concrete forms, cement, sand, gravel, rebar | We added three feet to base in 2001 because it was hopelessly corroded. Now the same thing is happening to the foldover assembly. Safe fix is to encase it in concrete. | ~ 200 |
Routine Maintenance
Outside maintenance encompasses ongoing care of all of the station components that are outside of the house, including towers, antennas, feedlines, rotors, radials, cabling, switchboxes, and transformers. Ongoing care includes rust and corrosion control, periodic inspections, and replacement of broken components. (Upgrades, such as addition of antennas, are NOT considered maintenance.)
